Two Salem Hills Elementary School teachers recently started their own children’s book series! English Language Teacher Sophie Polland and 4th-grade Teacher Jamie Lawless combined their talents to publish the first book in the series, “Strawberry’s Kindness.” Each book in the series will teach social emotional skills and offer resources for families and educators.
As a mom and educator, Ms. Polland has always wanted to see a book series that teaches life lessons. Inspired by her daughter’s love of rhyming books, she had the idea to write that book series herself. She approached Ms. Lawless to illustrate the books after finishing the plot of her first story.
“It has been a lifetime goal of mine to illustrate a book,” Ms. Lawless said. “I have always loved art, drawing, and doodling, so this felt like a perfect opportunity falling into place.”
The plot of “Strawberry’s Kindness” was inspired by students. It focuses on an unripe strawberry who meets a grumpy strawberry and uses kindness to build an unlikely friendship. The storyline grew from watching their classroom students engage with one another and seeing the impacts of their kindness on other students. Now that the first book is on shelves, they can see the reactions of their students too.
“It is so fun to watch our students listen and engage with our book in a classroom setting!” Ms. Polland said. “Students have loved seeing their teachers’ names on the cover, and it has been so fun to share the journey with them.”
They see the benefits to classrooms everywhere, too.
“As a teacher, building community in the classroom is one of the most important tasks in a school year,” Ms. Lawless said. “I hope our books will be used to build community and instill traits, such as kindness, in children everywhere.”
Their book series, Berry Kind Readers, will also include stories that teach self control, patience, and more. The book’s companion website provides additional learning resources for educators and families.

¡Hace poco, dos maestras de Salem Hills Elementary School comenzaron su propia serie de libros para niños! Como madre y educadora, la Sra. Polland siempre quiso ver una serie de libros que enseñara lecciones de vida. “¡Es muy divertido ver a nuestros estudiantes escuchar e interactuar con nuestro libro en un entorno de aula!”, dijo la Sra. Polland. “A los estudiantes les ha encantado ver los nombres de sus maestros en la portada, y ha sido muy divertido compartir el viaje con ellos”.
