Salem Hills Elementary School and the Atheneum Gifted Magnet Program held a Wig Out Day this October to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month and show support for 3rd Grade Teacher Erin Edge. Ms. Edge has been teaching at Salem Hills and Atheneum since 2019, so when she was diagnosed with cancer, the whole school rallied around her.
Ms. Edge says she has been open with students about her cancer and the treatment’s side effects. Her experiences have provided some life lessons for her students.
“I think it’s been an amazing opportunity for them to learn empathy and to see how even a challenge like cancer can be overcome,” she said. “I will get through this with a strong support system, and my students are a huge part of that.”
One of the side effects that Ms. Edge has discussed with her students is hair loss. When she expressed that she was nervous about wearing a wig, one student got an idea. The class planned a Wig Out Day to help her feel more comfortable, and when other teachers found out, Ms. Edge says the idea snowballed into a schoolwide event.
The whole school wore wigs, wild hair, or the color pink to show support for Ms. Edge during her treatment journey.
“It was one of the most humbling and amazing days of my teaching career,” she said. “The support and love from my students, families, staff, and friends has been beyond amazing. I could not be luckier to have the amazing support that I do at Salem and the district.”

Salem Hills Elementary School y el programa Atheneum Gifted Magnet organizaron un Wig Out Day este octubre para reconocer el Mes de concientización sobre el cáncer de mama y mostrar apoyo a la maestra de tercer grado Erin Edge. La Sra. Edge ha estado enseñando en Salem Hills y Atheneum desde 2019, por lo que cuando le diagnosticaron cáncer, toda la escuela se unió a ella.
La Sra. Edge dice que ha sido abierta con los estudiantes sobre su cáncer y los efectos secundarios del tratamiento. Sus experiencias han brindado algunas lecciones de vida para sus estudiantes.
"Creo que ha sido una oportunidad increíble para que aprendan empatía y vean cómo se puede superar incluso un desafío como el cáncer", dijo. "Superaré esto con un fuerte sistema de apoyo, y mis estudiantes son una gran parte de eso".
Uno de los efectos secundarios que la Sra. Edge ha discutido con sus estudiantes es la caída del cabello. Cuando expresó que estaba nerviosa por usar una peluca, un estudiante tuvo una idea. La clase planeó un día de pelucas para ayudarla a sentirse más cómoda y, cuando otros maestros se enteraron, la Sra. Edge dice que la idea se convirtió en un evento para toda la escuela.
Toda la escuela usó pelucas, cabello salvaje o el color rosa para mostrar apoyo a la Sra. Edge durante su tratamiento.
"Fue uno de los días más maravillosos y con más humildad de mi carrera docente", dijo. "El apoyo y el amor de mis estudiantes, familias, personal y amigos ha sido más que increíble. No podría tener más suerte de tener el increíble apoyo que tengo en Salem y el distrito".
