Teams and competitors from Pine Bend Elementary School and the Atheneum Gifted Magnet Program competed in a Math Masters Competition this spring with outstanding results! More than 5,000 students participated in Math Masters competitions across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Colorado this year. The competitions challenge 4th-, 5th-, and 6th-grade students to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills in mathematics.
Students competed in a 5-minute fact drill, three 10-minute Individual Problem-solving rounds, and three 15-minute Team Problem-solving rounds. Problems included everything from order of operations and the properties of numbers to geometry and statistics.
Pine Bend’s team of 4th graders included Natalie H., Nolan J., Cadence M., Alex M., Luca S., Gus S., Bredy T., and Lawrence W. Luca led Pine Bend’s wins by placing 2nd in the fact round. He took 1st in the individual round and Gus took 2nd. In the team round, Pine Bend's Red Team of Luca, Gus, Natalie, and Bredy took 1st place overall. This is only the third year that Math Masters competitions have included 4th graders.
This year, Atheneum had two teams of 5th graders in the competition. The team of Hannah B., Sam D., Max E., Celia K., and Owen S. won first place in the team segment. Owen also went on to take 1st in the individual competition. Atheneum’s team of Abigail C., William P., Cole S., Thomas S., and Vika V. took 2nd place in the teams competition.

Equipos y competidores de Pine Bend Elementary School y Atheneum Gifted Magnet Program compitieron en la Competencia de Maestros de Matemáticas esta primavera con resultados sobresalientes. Más de 5,000 estudiantes participaron en las competencias de Maestros de Matemáticas en Minnesota, Wisconsin y Colorado este año. Las competencias desafían a los estudiantes de 4º, 5º y 6º grado a usar el pensamiento crítico y las habilidades de resolución de problemas en matemáticas.
Los estudiantes compitieron en un ejercicio de operaciones de 5 minutos, tres rondas individuales de resolución de problemas de 10 minutos y tres rondas de resolución de problemas en equipo de 15 minutos. Los problemas abarcaron desde el orden de las operaciones y las propiedades de los números hasta geometría y estadística.
El equipo de 4º grado de Pine Bend estuvo compuesto por Natalie H., Nolan J., Cadence M., Alex M., Luca S., Gus S., Bredy T. y Lawrence W. Luca lideró las victorias de Pine Bend al obtener el segundo lugar en la ronda de operaciones. Obtuvo el primer lugar en la ronda individual y Gus el segundo. En la ronda por equipos, el Equipo Rojo de Pine Bend, compuesto por Luca, Gus, Natalie y Bredy, obtuvo el primer lugar general. Este es apenas el tercer año que las competencias de Math Masters incluyen a estudiantes de 4º grado.
Este año, Atheneum contó con dos equipos de 5º grado. El equipo de Hannah B., Sam D., Max E., Celia K. y Owen S. obtuvo el primer lugar en la sección por equipos. Owen también obtuvo el primer lugar en la competencia individual. El equipo de Atheneum, compuesto por Abigail C., William P., Cole S., Thomas S. y Vika V., obtuvo el segundo lugar en la competencia por equipos.
