Students from grades 4, 7, and 11 were selected to be members of this year’s Inver Grove Heights Schools Student Advisory Council. Members meet with the superintendent to provide a student perspective on topics related to the school day. Students also learn leadership skills that they bring back to their schools.
At their first meeting, students visited the ISD 199 District Office to meet with Superintendent Dave Bernhardson. They learned about their role as council members and did introductions to get more comfortable working together across grade levels. Students also learned about the 199 Way, which guides the actions of ISD 199 teachers and staff. The 199 Way emphasizes the importance of:
- Belonging - Making students feel welcome, known, included, supported, and connected
- Relationships - Being genuine and vulnerable in communication and interactions
- Engagement - Creating the condition for students to be enthusiastic learners and highly involved in school
After learning about the 199 Way, students brainstormed what belonging, positive relationships, and engagement should look, sound, and feel like. Students wrote that belonging feels like being accepted, looks like being asked to join discussions, and sounds like laughter among other examples. Their ideas will be shared with staff and teachers to further improve the school experience for all students.
The meeting ended with a tour of the district office. Students met the staff there and learned how all of the district departments and schools collaborate to serve students. Council members will continue to do activities focused on leadership skills and learning about the district at meetings throughout this school year.
Los estudiantes de los grados 4, 7 y 11 fueron seleccionados para ser miembros del Consejo Asesor Estudiantil de Inver Grove Heights Schools de este año. Los miembros se reúnen con el superintendente para brindar una perspectiva estudiantil sobre temas relacionados con la jornada escolar. Los estudiantes también aprenden habilidades de liderazgo que llevan consigo a sus escuelas.
En su primera reunión, los estudiantes visitaron la Oficina del Distrito ISD 199 para reunirse con el Superintendente Dave Bernhardson. Aprendieron sobre su papel como miembros del consejo e hicieron presentaciones para sentirse más cómodos trabajando juntos en todos los niveles de grado. Los estudiantes también aprendieron sobre el método 199, que guía las acciones de los maestros y el personal de ISD 199. El método 199 enfatiza la importancia de:

Después de aprender sobre el método 199, los estudiantes intercambiaron ideas sobre cómo deberían verse, sonar y sentirse la pertenencia, las relaciones positivas y el compromiso. Los estudiantes escribieron que la pertenencia se siente como ser aceptado, se ve como que te inviten a participar en las discusiones y suena como una risa, entre otros ejemplos. Sus ideas se compartirán con el personal y los maestros para mejorar aún más la experiencia escolar para todos los estudiantes.
La reunión finalizó con un recorrido por la oficina del distrito. Los estudiantes conocieron al personal allí y aprendieron cómo todos los departamentos y escuelas del distrito colaboran para servir a los estudiantes. Los miembros del consejo continuarán realizando actividades enfocadas en las habilidades de liderazgo y el aprendizaje sobre el distrito en las reuniones a lo largo de este año escolar.
