NHS students seek volunteers to assist with packaging meals on Saturday
February 8,
2012Three Simley High
School students have collected more than $3,000 to package meals to
send
to families in developing countries. Ashley Woodward, Katie Kruse and
Sara Kiefat have been raising money for their National Honor Society
(NHS) senior project since November, and they are seeking volunteers to
help pack meals this Saturday.
The idea to send food
to developing countries sprung from an experience Ashley had with Impact
Lives, the group that will be delivering the meals. Ashley's cousin,
who used to work for Impact Lives, invited her to a packing event two
years ago and she absolutely loved it. Ashley thought it would make for
an
excellent NHS project. Her friends jumped on board with the idea because
of the meaningful impact the project would have on the families
receiving the meals.
The girls have sold suckers at
lunch and run coin drives at Simley and Salem Hills Elementary School.
A couple of businesses have donated funds, too.
With the money raised so far, the group can package more than 15,000
meals.
Their goal is to package 20,000 meals, which would require raising
another
$1,000 to bring their grand total to $4,000.
"I think
it's
awesome to set a goal way higher than how much we've raised so far,"
said Ashley. "For three full-time high school students we
did a really good job being able to collect $3,000 to package almost
17,000 meals."
Donations are being accepted until the
packing starts this Saturday at 9:30 a.m. If you would like to
donate time or money, please contact Simley's main office at
651-306-7000 or simply drop in to add your name to a sign-up
sheet for the event.
