Saving Files

Here are directions for saving your files to the network.  If you save your files to My Documents, or Desktop, they will disappear once the computer is turned off.  You must save to your file on the server.

If you have trouble following any of these directions, please ask your teacher, or IMC staff  for assistance.  We are here to help you.

Saving in Windows

Log into a computer with your username and password.

Once you have a Word document, or PowerPoint presentation ready to save, you must use the “Save As” function.

Go to File, Choose “Save As.”

You will now work in the "Save As" window.

“Save In” is located under “Save As.” This is a drop-down window. Open the drop-down window. Read down the list to your name. Bring your name into the drop-down window.

Now it is time to give your file a name. There will already be a default name for your file. If you want to change it, make sure that the ending of the file, such as .doc or .ppt remains unchanged. Only change the information before the period.

Examples.

A student has created a PowerPoint presentation on animals in Africa. The students names the file, “animalsinafrica,” and types this name before the period and ppt.

File name:   animalsinafrica.ppt

A student has created a Word document in Microsoft Word on animals in Africa. The ending for word documents is doc. The students names the file, “animalsinafrica” which is typed before the period and doc.

File name:   animalsinafrica.doc

Once you have your last name at the top of the window and have named your file, click save.
