In early February, scholarship booklets and application forms are distributed to all interested Simley students. It is each student’s responsibility to read the booklet and apply for any scholarships for which they may qualify.
After scholarship applications are turned in, the selection process begins:
-
Applicants’ GPA, test scores, class rank, school activities, work experience, community activities, and financial need are assigned a rating using a pre-established rating scale.
-
A master list of applicants and information is entered into a computer database.
-
Applications are coded and names are removed from the paper copy and the computer generated scholarship pages.
-
The computer program sorts applicants onto pages for each scholarship for which they applied and are qualified.
-
The applications, scholarship pages, and selection instructions are given to the scholarship selection committee members. The committee is made up of community members, teachers, and other interested individuals; no IGH BEST Foundation members, nor the Career Center Coordinator, are on the committee.
-
Each committee member ranks the applications for about 15 scholarships. Three different committee members independently rank each scholarship.
-
Individual committee member’s rankings are entered into the computer, totaled, and applications are sorted within each scholarship according to rank.
-
Scholarships are awarded from greatest to least value. This gives students the opportunity to receive the highest-value scholarship for which they qualify.
-
All applicants are notified whether or not they will be awarded a scholarship. Recipients are invited to attend the scholarship awards reception in May. Students do not know which scholarship they will receive until the reception.
Scholarships are paid directly to the post-secondary institution, generally upon verification of completion of the student’s first semester of post-secondary education.
